Frequently Asked Questions about Indoor Lighting

  • In Australia, any work involving fixed wiring — including installing or replacing hardwired ceiling lights, pendant fittings, or wall sconces — must be carried out by a licensed electrician. This is a legal requirement under Australian electrical safety regulations and applies in all states and territories. Plug-in lamps and battery-operated fittings can be set up without a licensed tradesperson. If you are unsure whether your fitting requires hardwiring, we recommend consulting a licensed electrician before proceeding.

  • For living areas, a layered lighting approach works best. This means combining ambient lighting (such as a ceiling pendant or downlights) for general illumination, task lighting (such as a floor lamp or table lamp) for reading or focused activity, and accent lighting to highlight features like shelving or artwork. Warm white bulbs in the 2700K–3000K colour temperature range tend to create the most comfortable and inviting atmosphere in living spaces.

  • A straightforward way to estimate your lighting needs is to use lumens rather than watts. Lumens measure the actual brightness of a light, while watts measure energy consumption. As a general guide, living rooms benefit from around 1,500–3,000 lumens in total, bedrooms from 1,000–2,000 lumens, kitchens from 3,000–4,000 lumens, and bathrooms from 2,000–3,000 lumens. These figures can be achieved through a single fitting or a combination of light sources. Rooms with dark walls, low ceilings, or limited natural light will generally require more lumens to feel well lit.

  • Most quality LED bulbs are rated to last between 15,000 and 25,000 hours. Under typical household use of around 8 hours per day, that translates to roughly 5 to 8 years before replacement is needed.

  • LED lights are generally safe to leave on for extended periods as they produce very little heat compared to halogen or incandescent bulbs. That said, turning lights off when not in use is recommended for energy efficiency and to extend the lifespan of the fitting.

  • Flickering is most commonly caused by a loose bulb connection, an incompatible dimmer switch, or a bulb that is nearing the end of its life. If flickering persists after checking the bulb and connections, or occurs across multiple fittings, it is best to have a licensed electrician inspect the wiring.
